Choir sings The City Garden in St Peter’s Church, Hammersmith

On Sunday 6th July 50 members of Salisbury Community Choir went to St Peter’s Church Hammersmith for their festival concert to sing “The City Garden” with St Peter’s Church Choir.  The piece was accompanied by the Will Todd trio and conducted by our own musical accompanist David Coram.  The afternoon rehearsal went well and the concert was soon upon us.  The concert started with three girls from the Royal College of Music singing Bob Chilcott’s Little Jazz Mass accompanied by David Coram on the organ and by the Will Todd Trio drums.  The girls voices carried beautifully in the church and it was very special.  The City Garden was great fun to sing in a smaller group and without the usual orchestral accompaniment.  This time it was just the Will Todd Jazz Trio and a string quartet -strings (violins/viola) and a cello.  The sound was very different and having the Jazz Trio certainly helped the syncopation in the trickier bits!

We were given a very warm welcome by St Peters’ and it was a very enjoyable day.

Letter from David Coram:

I don’t have enough words of thanks for the hard work, frustration and tenacity which went into making last night’s City Garden possible. It’s testament to the way Jeremy works that it was possible to extract perhaps 30% of the choir and still have a performance with all the commitment, confidence and energy of 150 people. The conductors of the two main Chiswick/Hammersmith choral societies were there, and simply could not believe the sound they were hearing was coming from a community choir – it was straight out of the top drawer and I don’t think I’ve ever felt so proud. Thank you Jeremy for letting me have a go at it!
